When is the Best Time to Visit Meghalaya?

The best time to visit Meghalaya is from October to February, which is the dry, winter season with the perfect weather offering sunny days, clear skies, and reasonable temperatures for outdoor activities and sightseeing. However, you can book Meghalaya tour packages year-round depending on the type of holiday you wish to have, budget, weather, and preferred activities.

Climate in Meghalaya: Meghalaya typically has a temperate, subtropical, and humid climate strongly influenced by the South-West monsoon. Featuring heavy rainfall particularly in the south, Meghalaya is called the "Abode of Clouds" and offers warm, wet summers and cool, dry winters, alongside temperate conditions in the hills.

  • Spring (March to April): Expect warm days, cool evenings, and ideal temperatures for outdoor explorations.

  • Summer (May to June): The days are warmer, offering excellent sunny skies for visiting waterfalls and boating in Dawki.

  • Monsoon (May to September): July to September is typically the wettest period in Meghalaya, with intense showers, high humidity, and low visibility.

  • Autumn (October to November): The post-monsoon season, it offers clear, perfect weather for sightseeing and photography, with blooming cherry blossoms and lush greenery.

  • Winter (December to February): The dry, cold weather makes it ideal for outdoor tourism in mist-covered valleys and landscapes.

Best Time by Budget and Season:

  • Best Overall - Peak Season (October to February): The weather in Meghalaya is clearest and best during this period, ensuring visitors enjoy a range of outdoor activities, including hiking, waterfalls, boating, and wildlife safaris.

  • Best for Budget - Low or Off-Peak Season (June to September): The monsoon months are the cheapest for visiting Meghalaya, as the heavy rain and potential for landslides keeps most tourists away, resulting in lower costs for accommodation and flights.

  • Best Value for Money - Shoulder Season (March to April and October to November): The pre-monsoon months and post-monsoon months offer the best-value holidays to Meghalaya, with affordable accommodation, cheaper flights, and fewer crowds. The weather is pleasant, too.

Key Considerations:

  • Best for Waterfalls: The monsoon season is best for waterfalls in Meghalaya, but it can be dangerous to try exploring new places without a local guide.

  • Best for Wildlife and Treks: October to April is the perfect time to visit Meghalaya's wildlife parks and sanctuaries, with clear visibility and comfortable temperatures. This is also the best period for treks to living root bridges.

  • Avoid: Peak season can be costly for visiting Meghalaya, especially if you're on a budget. However, you can offset costs by planning and booking in advance.

Travel Tips for a Smooth Meghalaya Trip

Whether you're booking extensive Meghalaya road trip packages or arriving by a quick flight, it's essential to keep a few basic things in mind when visiting this scenic northeastern state in India. They include:

  • Choose the Right Travel Season: October to April is the ideal time for treks, wildlife, boating, and other outdoor adventures, while waterfalls in Meghalaya are best experienced during the monsoon months of June to September. Pick a travel time most suited to the type of holiday in Meghalaya you wish to have, budget, weather preferences, and other key details.

  • Accommodation Choice: Prioritize homestays and budget hotels for low-cost breaks, pick boutique stays for a mid-range Meghalaya package, and opt for luxury 5-star hotels and resorts to experience premium vacations with exclusive perks (room upgrades, late check-out, etc.).

  • Transportation Options: Private taxes are best to explore Meghalaya at your pace, but you can pick shared vehicles for a more budget-friendly experience. MTDC Tourist Buses are another affordable option, primarily available from Sohra and Dawki. Ridesharing apps are available in specific areas, so may not be convenient.

  • Carry Sufficient Cash: With limited UPI payments outside main towns like Shillong, it's crucial to carry enough cash for local markets, transport, rural areas, meals, and other miscellaneous expenses. ATMs are sparse in rural areas, and often non-functional, so ensure to withdraw a reasonable amount in big towns before embarking on tours to remote areas.

  • Things to Pack:

  • Dress Code: Casual wear is acceptable in big towns like Shillong, but it's best to dress modestly in rural areas and villages, keeping the shoulders and knees covered.

  • Daily Wear: Bring quick-dry, breathable outfits and avoid cotton if visiting during the monsoon. Light woolens, a fleece jacket, and other warm clothes are essential for cool evenings and outdoors.

  • Swimwear: Pack a good-quality swimwear if you plan on swimming in river-fed areas, and carry a sarong or wrap for leaving the swimming area.

  • Footwear: Removable sandals are ideal for visiting holy places where you will need to remove them. Pack sturdy, waterproof hiking shoes with good grip for trekking and outdoor excursions. A fancy pair can be useful for upscale restaurants and events.

  • Health and Toiletries: Include a first-aid kit to address minor cuts and injuries. Pack insect repellents, moisturizers, pain relief and anti-allergen meds, and any prescription medication you may be on. Don't forget to keep the prescription for the medication.

  • Sun and Rain Protection: The sun can be harsh in Meghalaya despite the clouds, so bring a high-SPF sunscreen, large rimmed sunhats or caps, and other sun protection. For rains, carry a raincoat, an umbrella, waterproof footwear, and other essentials to keep you dry.

  • Electronics: A power bank and charger is a must to keep your smartphone and other electronic devices charged. A torch, headlamp, or an emergency light can be a good addition for treks.

  • Waterproof Backpack: A sturdy backpack with robust shoulder pads can be extremely useful during hikes and outdoor tours, keeping your belongings safe and dry.

  • Reusable Water Bottle: This can come in handy during trekking, daytime tours, and other activities in the sun, ensuring you stay hydrated at all times.

  • Food and Drink Tips:

  • Safety: Eat at crowded stalls for street food, and pick reputable restaurants for dining, as they follow hygiene protocols. Avoid tap water and opt for bottled water. You can also refill your reusable water bottle at hotels or homestays with RO-filtered water.

  • Avoid: Do not take ice in drinks at local places, and avoid pre-cut fruits and raw salads. Order fresh food at restaurants instead of buffets, as these may have items left open for long hours.

  • Must-Try Items: Sample the iconic Jadoh (red rice cooked with meat), and don't miss out on other local Meghalaya specialties like Doh-neiiong, Tungrymbai, Pukhlein, Nakham Bitchi, DohKleh, and Galda Natok.

  • Environmental Responsibility: Avoid single-use plastic in Meghalaya, and do not litter near pools, waterfalls, and public places. Never disturb the wildlife, and avoid touching or feeding the animals unless expressly permitted to do so.

  • General Etiquette:

  • Respect the local culture in Meghalaya, and don't insult their traditions, history, heritage, and way of life.

  • Be polite to the locals, greet them with a warm smile and nod, and speak in soft tones.

  • Many restaurants and shops in Meghalaya are closed on Sundays for church services, so plan your meals and trips likewise.

  • Always ask for permission from the locals in Meghalaya before taking their pictures. Photography may not be allowed in sacred places, so inquire beforehand.

  • Use your right hand to eat, pass food and other items, and to shake hands in Meghalaya.

  • Safety Tips:

  • Weather Precautions: Meghalaya can be extremely wet, particularly during the monsoon, so take extra precaution when exploring outdoors.

  • Transport and Driving: If driving, avoid it late at night due to poor visibility and unfamiliarity with local routes. It's best to hire local vehicles with experienced chauffeurs.

  • Connectivity: Network coverage can be poor in Meghalaya, so it's prudent to download maps to use offline. It's also advisable to keep someone informed of your itinerary.

  • Nightlife and Alcohol: Avoid being out too late, usually by 10:00 PM, and be particularly cautious in rural areas with poor lighting. Never overdrink, and never accept drinks from strangers.

  • Emergency Numbers: Keep in hand all national emergency numbers, including for police (100), fire department (101), ambulance (102), and women helpline (1091).

  • Tourist Visa: International tourists will need a visa for visiting Meghalaya, and it is mandatory for all foreign nationals to register upon arrival and adhere to applicable rules for safety.

How to Reach Meghalaya

By Air:

Meghalaya tour packages including flights are the most popular among most tourists as the easiest way to reach this beautiful northeast state is by air. Top airport options include the Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (GAU) in Guwahati and Umroi Airport (SHL) in Shillong. There's also a 7-seater helicopter service between Guwahati Airport and Upper Shillong, making travel hassle-free.

Daily direct flights from Kolkata to Shillong take approximately 1.5 hours, while flights from New Delhi usually involve layovers, with limited direct options via airlines like SpiceJet. Major airlines serving Shilling include Air India, IndiGo, and SpiceJet. Direct flights to Guwahati are available from Delhi, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Kolkata, and tourists can travel to Shillong from here.

By Rail:

Guwahati Railway Station (GHY) is the main railhead for Meghalaya, well-connected to major cities like Delhi, Kolkata, and Chennai. Prepaid taxis, bus services, and private cabs are available from Shillong and other parts of Meghalaya. Alternatively, the local Mendipathar Railway Station in North Garo Hills, Meghalaya, connects to Dudhnoi and Guwahati in Assam, but has limited options.

Popular trains from Delhi to Guwahati include Dibrugarh Rajdhani Express, North East Express, and diverse Vande Bharat connections. From Kolkata, you can board the Saraighat Express and Kamrup Express to Guwahati. From south and west India, take trains like the Bangalore-Guwahati Express and other major lines.

By Road:

To reach Meghalaya by road, travelers must first go to Guwahati (Assam), which is approximately 100 kilometers away from Shillong. NH40 is the primary hub that connects Guwahati to Shillong via a 3 to 4-hour bus/taxi journey. From Kolkata, the journey is a little longer, taking around 10 to 12 hours via NH12 and NH27 routes, passing through Siliguri and Guwahati.

The journey from Delhi is even longer, taking approximately 30 hours and re-routing through Lucknow, Gorakhpur, and Guwahati. While buses are available in plenty for reaching Meghalaya by road, taxis and hired vehicles (private and shared) are much faster and more flexible, especially for exploring remote areas like Cherrapunji.
