Essential Travel Tips for Kashmir Trip

The following packing checklist can help you plan your Kashmir vacation without stress or hassle, ensuring you don’t miss bringing anything important while also preventing over-packing.

  • Pick the Right Time to Travel: March to October is a fantastic time to visit Kashmir, offering the best weather for various tours and activities. Pick off-peak or low season for budget-friendly Kashmir holidays, or plan a trip by activity, such as spring for Tulip Festival or autumn for photography.

  • Accommodation Choice: Kashmir has plenty of 3 to 4-star hotels that many budget and mid-range packages feature, while luxury 5-star hotels and premium houseboat stays are typically reserved for luxury packages with curated experiences. Choose accommodations depending on your budget, preference, and travel style.

  • Packing Essentials:

  • First-Aid Kit: Carry Band-Aids, disinfectants, cotton, and other essentials to manage small cuts, abrasions, and injuries.

  • Prescription Pills: Bring any necessary medication you may be on, and don't forget to keep the prescription as it can be handy for refills.

  • OTC Drugs: Consider over-the-counter pills for Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) at high altitudes, stomach upsets, and similar ailments.

  • Travel Adapter and Charger: Pack a powerbank, charger, and other essential tools to ensure your smartphone and other devices remain charged.

  • Rain and Sun Protection: Get an umbrella and raincoat for the monsoon. If visiting Kashmir in the summer, bring a strong sunscreen, a hat, a light jacket, and other sun protection.

  • Waterproof Backpack: An all-weather backpack or travel back is handy to carry water and other essentials during hikes, shopping, walking tours, and sightseeing. It can also keep your money pouch safe.

  • Keep Documents Handy: Make copies of your government-issued photo ID cards, special travel permits (if any), and other important documents as a backup in case of loss of theft.

  • Connectivity and Payment:

  • There are several network providers in Kashmir offering strong 4G and 5G coverage. However, strength may often drop in high-altitude areas and deep valleys.

  • Hotels and houseboats in Srinagar offer Wi-Fi, but speed may vary. It may also be available at other prominent tourist areas in Kashmir.

  • UPI and online payment is widely accepted in Kashmir, making it easier for Indian tourists who prefer this way. Cash is often required in rural areas, small shops, pony rides, street food stalls, and other remote areas.

  • ATMs are reliable only in larger Kashmir towns like Srinagar, Kangan, and Pahalgam.

  • Plan Local Transport:

  • Private Cabs and Tourist Taxes: These are widely available at Srinagar airport, railway stations, most hotels, and heavily-crowded tourist areas.

  • Shared Cabs and Mini Bus: The most cost-effective way to travel in Kashmir, these are found across multiple cities and suburban areas, typically on fixed routes.

  • Scooter/Bike Rental: The best option for solo travelers and couples, two-wheeler rentals offer the flexibility to navigate narrow roads and sightsee at a relaxed pace.

  • Shikara Rides: These traditional wooden boats are essential to navigate Dal Lake and Nigeen Lake, and are largely used for transportation and sightseeing.

  • Ridesharing Apps: Uber offers reliable, quick rides in Srinagar, and may also be available in other popular cities.

  • Dress Code and Footwear:

  • Modesty is key in Kashmir due to the conservative local culture, so prioritize apparel that covers the shoulders and knees. This is especially important when visiting mosques, temples, and other holy sites in Kashmir.

  • Pick light cotton fabric for summer, with a jacket for the evenings. Pack layers for autumn, with cardigans and sweaters. Bring thermals for winter, including high-quality woolens, puffer jackets, woolen socks, and windcheaters.

  • Waterproof insulated snowboots are a must for winters, while sturdy walking boots or shoes are a must for outdoor activities and hikes in all weather conditions. Comfortable, removable sandals are best for tours to holy sites.

  • Food and Drink Tips:

  • Safety Concerns: Opt for freshly-made hot meals at restaurants and crowded street food stalls, as these are most hygienic. Drink only packaged mineral water available with an intact seal.

  • Avoid: Forgo stale food, raw salads, and pre-cut fruits, as they may not be fresh and safe to eat. Avoid tap water and do not drink directly from lakes or streams in Kashmir.

  • Must-Try Local Food: Don't miss out on Wazwan delicacies like Rogan Josh and Tabak Maaz, vegetarian specialties like Dun Olav and Nudru Yakhni, and local favorites like Gushtaba, Rista, Kebabs, and Bakarkhani.

  • Must-Have Experiences: Pack your itinerary with must-dos like Gulmarg Gondola rides, shikara rides on Dal Lake, Doodhpathri meadows, Thajiwas Glacier trek, Lidder River adventures in Pahalgam, and Mughal Gardens in Srinagar.

  • General Etiquettes:

  • Respect local culture at all times and never criticize Kashmiri heritage. Also, avoid discussions about politics, religion, spirituality, and other sensitive topics.

  • Women must carry a scarf to cover their head when visiting holy places.

  • It is polite to accept Kahwa (special local tea) if offered, as Kashmiris are known for their hospitality.

  • Avoid public displays of affection, loud and aggressive behavior, and unruly gestures in Kashmir.

  • Never take photographs of Kashmiris without first asking for permission. It may also be prohibited to take pictures at certain holy places.

  • Do not touch religious artifacts in shrines and other sacred places in Kashmir.

  • Use your right hand to eat in Kashmir, and wait for your host to begin before joining in the meal.

  • Although available in some restaurants and hotels, consume alcohol discreetly and without offending the locals, as it is not part of the culture.

  • Safety Tips:

  • Keep copies of your government-issued photo ID and any special travel permits to Kashmir, as backup in case of loss or theft.

  • Remember that Kashmir is a high-altitude region, so acclimatize yourself slowly and steadily before embarking on challenging treks.

  • If visiting Kashmir in the winter, be prepared for heavy snowfall which can often lead to road closures and extreme temperatures.

  • It is advisable to get a postpaid mobile connection, and prepaid cards from other states often do not work well in Kashmir.

  • Carry enough cash for local markets, tips, small vendors, rural areas, and other essential expenses, as ATMs may not always work.

  • Do not venture into restricted areas on your own, especially those that need a special permit.

  • Avoid dark, dimly-lit, and secluded areas in Kashmir at night, even if traveling in a group.

  • Monitor the local news for unrest or disturbances, adjusting your itinerary likewise.

  • Emergency Contacts: Keep all emergency numbers in Kashmir handy, including police (112, 100), ambulance (108, 102), fire service (101), and women's helpline (1091).

  • Permits and Regulations: A Protected Area Permit (PAP) or Restricted Area Permit (RAP) may be required even by Indians for specific border, remote, or sensitive security areas.

  • Tourist Visa: International tourists will need to apply for a tourist visa to visit Kashmir. Additionally, foreign tourists need exclusive special permits for certain areas, and may not be allowed in a few others.

How to Reach Kashmir

By Air:

Flying into the Srinagar International Airport (SXR) in Srinagar is the easiest way to reach Kashmir, with the airport located only 12 kilometers from the city center of Srinagar. Major airlines serving Srinagar airport include SpiceJet, Air India Express, IndiGo, Akasa Air, Vistara, and Air India, operating daily flights.

Many Kashmir packages feature low-cost flights for greater convenience, from major hubs like Delhi (approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes), Mumbai (approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes), and Chandigarh (approximately 1 hour and 5 minutes). You can also travel to Srinagar from Hyderabad (approximately 2 to 3 hours) and Bangalore (approximately 3 hours and 35 minutes).

By Rail:

Jammu Tawi Railway Station (JAT) is the main, well-connected station with good railway connectivity across India. Visitors can also arrive at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra (SVDK) station, used for connections. From Jammu and Katra railway stations, you can take a bus or taxi to your onward destination.

Several major trains connect to Jammu Tawai and Katra from Delhi and other significant parts of India. These include Jammu Mail, Vande Bharat, Jhelum Express, and Rajdhani trains. You can select the best option for you depending on the departure city.

By Road:

National Highway 44 (NH-44/NH-1A) connects Jammu to Srinagar through the Jawahar Tunnel, with several state-operated and private buses, rental cars, and private taxis operating on this route. The journey typically takes 8 to 10 hours, with picturesque views of the Himalayas en route.
