How to Reach Bhutan from India

By Flights

The easiest and fastest way to reach Bhutan from India is by taking a direct flight from select Indian cities like Kolkata (CCU), Delhi (DEL), and Guwahati (GAU) to Paro International Airport (PBH), Bhutan's only international airport. Bagdogra (IXB) and Gaya (GAY) offer direct seasonal (regular/pilgrimage) flights to Bhutan.

Connecting flights to Paro, Bhutan, are available from hubs like Mumbai (BOM), Hyderabad (HYD), Bengaluru (BLR), and Ahmedabad (AMD). Drukair (Royal Bhutan Airlines) and Bhutan Airlines regularly operate flights between India and Bhutan.

By Road

A Bhutan tour package by road involves a scenic journey that typically starts by first reaching the border town of Jaigaon in West Bengal and crossing into Phuentsholing in Bhutan. Bagdogra Airport (IXB) is the nearest airport to Jaigaon, while the nearest railway stations are Hasimara (HSA) or New Jalpaiguri (NJP/Siliguri), from where you can take a bus, taxi, or a private cab to Jaigaon.

Gelephu and Samdrup Jongkhar (both in Assam) are other entry points, serving eastern or central regions, but are far from major tourist hubs like Thimphu and Paro. It's pivotal to carry a valid Indian Passport or Voter ID Card for the Bhutan border crossing.

Bhutan Visa and Entry Requirements for Indian Travelers

Indian nationals do not require a visa to visit Bhutan, but they will be issued an Entry Permit by the Department of Immigration in the Pedestrian Terminal at Phuentsholing, provided they carry a valid travel document. Other entry/exit points on the southern Indo-Bhutan border are in Samdrup Jongkhar, Samtse, and Sarpang/Gelephu.

Indian tourists can obtain the Bhutan Entry Permit online before travel, and are required to pay a Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) of INR 1,200 per person per night (current price). Children aged 5 years and below are exempt from paying the SDF fee, while aged 6 to 12 years are given a 50% concession on it.

Travel documents required to obtain Bhutan Entry Permit include:

  • Original Indian Passport with at least 6 months’ validity, or original Voter ID Card

  • Birth certificates or passports for children below 18 years old, and they must be accompanied by a legal guardian

  • 02 Passport-sized recent photographs

  • Travel insurance covering the entire duration of the trip

Indian-registered vehicles are allowed within the designated zone in Bhutan without any charges, but you will need to pay a Green Tax per day if the vehicle goes beyond the Rinchending Check Post in Phuentsholing. You must also register on the Check Post Management System (CPMS) to cross the RBP check points.

Vehicle documents required:

  • Original, valid driving license

  • Original Registration Certificate (should not be over 10 years old from the date of registration)

  • Owner of the vehicle must be the same person; if the driver and owner are not the same, the driver must carry an authority letter from the owner

  • Vehicle insurance

  • Vehicle road worthiness and emission certificate

Tourist Places to Visit in Bhutan

Paro Taktsang (Tiger's Nest Monastery)

Among the most famous of Bhutan tourism places and also known as the Taktsang Palphug Monastery, this sacred Vajrayana Himalayan Buddhist site is perched atop a precarious cliff of the upper Paro valley at 3,120 meters. The round-trip hike to the famed monastery covers around 8 kilometers, taking 4 to 5 hours in total.

Chele La Pass

It is the highest motorable road pass in Bhutan located on the Bondey-Haa Highway, sitting at an altitude of 3,988 meters above sea level, parked between the spectacular Paro and Haa valleys. The winding road promises a scenic drive through dense pine and rhododendron forests.

Punakha Dzong

The administrative center of Punakha District and known natively as Pungthang Dewa Chhenbi Phodrang, it is the second-largest and second-oldest dzong in Bhutan. The fortress-monastery complex is famous for vibrant purple-blue jacaranda trees that bloom in the spring.

Punakha Suspension Bridge

Ranked among the longest suspension bridges in Bhutan, it stretches approximately 160 to 180 meters across the roaring, glacier-fed Po Chhu (Father River). Built using strong steel cables and wooden planks, the bridge is heavily decorated with colorful Buddhist prayer flags.

Buddha Dordenma

The gigantic Shakyamuni Buddha statue stands tall at 177 feet and celebrates the 60th anniversary of fourth king Jigme Singye Wangchuck. Made of solid bronze and gilded in pure gold, the striking statue houses thousands of smaller gilded bronze Buddha statues.

Tashichho Dzong

The majestic Buddhist monastery and fortress located on the northern edge of Thimphu serves as the political and religious center of Bhutan. It houses the throne room and offices of His Majesty the King, besides the national secretariat and various government ministries.

National Memorial Chorten

The Tibetan-style Buddhist stupa located on Doeboom Lam in the heart of Thimphu was built to honor the third king of Bhutan, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. It serves as a symbolic cenotaph and does not enshrine human remains, and is popularly referred to by the locals as the "most visible religious landmark in Bhutan."

Chimi Lhakhang

A Buddhist monastery famously known as the "Fertility Temple" and located on a round hillock in Punakha, it honors Drukpa Kunley, an enlightened master known as the "Divine Madman". Childless couples and travelers from the world over visit this temple to seek blessings to have children.

Things to Do in Bhutan on Vacation

  • Hike to Paro Taktsang (Tiger's Nest): The scenic 4 to 6-hour round-trip trek consists of wide dirt tracks, lush pine forests, and picturesque views along the way, with the final stretch going down and back up past a waterfall. Stop by the Taktsang Cafeteria midway for snacks, water, and restroom breaks.

  • Drive Through Dochula Pass: Stop at an altitude of 3,100 meters to view clear panoramas of the Himalayan peaks and 108 memorial chortens (stupas) honoring Bhutanese soldiers. The route includes a traditional temple and the popular Dochula Cafe, where most travelers stop for hot coffee or tea.

  • White-Water Raft in Punakha: A refreshing adventure on the two glacial-fed Mo Chhu and Pho Chhu rivers, it offers tranquil floating ideal for beginners and families to more thrilling rapids the finish near the river confluence. Float past lush green valleys, terraced rice fields, ancient fortresses, suspension bridges, and traditional Bhutanese villages.

  • Cross the Punakha Suspension Bridge: Walk high above the roaring Po Chhu River with views of the surrounding Himalayan valley and mountain slopes, swaying slowly along with the bridge as it moves gently during strong winds. Share the stroll with local villagers, monks, and even farm animals crossing between settlements.

  • Trek the High Himalayas: Go on popular routes like the Druk Path Trek or the Bumdra Trek, with views of glacial lakes and alpine forests. Experience fully-serviced tent camping with pit tents for sleeping, hot water for washing, and dining, wherein fresh meals are prepared daily by an accompanying expert chef.

  • Explore Historic Dzongs: Visit the magnificent Punakha Dzong built at the meeting point of Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers, walk through the postcard-worthy courtyards of Thimphu's Tashichho Dzong, enjoy sweeping views of the Choekhor Valley from Jakar Yugyal Dzong, and attend the famous Paro Tsechu festival hosted in Rinpung Dzong.

Mountain bike along famous routes like the Paro Valley Loop or trails through Bumthang and Punakha, riding past unparalleled local beauty.

  • Play Traditional Archery: Traditional archery (Dha) is Bhutan's national sport, and booking a private hands-on lesson can be the most adrenaline-pumping thing to do on your trip. Matches are highly social with a festive atmosphere, participants wearing traditional Bhutanese apparel, and plenty of local food and drinks.

  • Soak in a Hot Stone Bath: Enjoy a traditional Bhutanese hot stone bath (Dotsho or Menchu), a centuries-old wellness ritual where large glowing-red river stones are placed into a wooden tub of fresh mountain water infused with medicinal herbs like Artemisia. You can request the host to add more stones if you want the water hotter.

  • Spot Wildlife in Phobjikha Valley: Observe the culturally revered black-necked cranes between late October and mid-February, besides other endemic birds. Lush pine forests house barking deer, red foxes, wild boars, Himalayan black bears, and other wildlife species, with early mornings and late afternoons offering the best viewing times.

  • Witness a Tshechu Festival: The immersive experience involves vibrant community gatherings, dances in elaborate hand-painted wooden masks and brilliant silk brocade costumes, and living Buddhist traditions, with synchronized movements and booming traditional instruments re-enact mythological events, moral lessons, and legendary battles.

  • Taste Local Cuisine: Bhutanese cuisine is defined by its heavy use of local cheese and hot chilies, served alongside hearty, nutty red rice. Top dishes include Ema Datshi, Phaksha Paa, Kewa Datshi, Jasha Maru, and Momos, accompanied by drinks like Suja (traditional butter tea) and Ara (local alcoholic beverage).

Best Time to Visit Bhutan on Vacations

The best time to visit Bhutan is during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November), when Bhutan weather is at its clearest best for trekking, photography, and sightseeing, with mild temperatures (15°C to 25°C), valleys in full bloom, and crisp, clear blue skies. Spring hosts cultural celebrations like the Paro Tshechu festival, while autumn witnesses the arrival of Thimphu Tshechu festival and rare black-necked cranes in Phobjikha Valley.

Winter (December to February) has cold, freezing nights, but is a great time for clear snowy mountain views with fewer tourist crowds around. Monsoon (June to August) brings heavy rains and slippery mountain trails, which turn the valleys spectacularly lush green. However, it is not a suitable time for outdoor activities in Bhutan.
